ROMANIA NEWS - road to EURO 2000 - The stadiums where Romania will play

LIEGE

Name : Sclessin Stadium

Home Club : R. Standard de Liège

Year Built : 1984

Capacity : 30,000 seats

The first phase of this stadium was completed in 1984. In 1993 a new stand with business seats was built opposite the central stand. During the latest renovation, started in 1998, a new stand was built on the side of the river Meuse. Furthermore, an extra tier was added on top of the main stands. On 30 March 1999, the stadium was officially opened. The opening game was a friendly between Belgium and Egypt. The new stand on the side of the river Meuse was constructed in such a way to allow large lorries, heavily laden with heavy constructions, to drive into the stadium, for instance for setting up large platforms. The stadium has been specially renovated for EURO 2000™ under the auspices of Adviesbureau R. Greisch S.A. and architectenbureau Audex. The new Sclessin is purposely built like a stadium in England, with stands close to the pitch, contributing to an electric atmosphere.

Romania will play the first of his game here against Germany on 12 June from 18.

ARNHEM

Name : Gelredome

Home Club : SBV Vitesse

Year Built : 1998

Capacity : 30,000 Seats

The futuristic Gelredome is arguably the most modern stadium in Europe. Designed by Alynia Architecten Harlingen BV and boasting a retractable pitch and roof, the 30,000-seater stadium is a daringdesign come to life. The multi-functional venue was first conceived in 1986, but the foundation stone was not laid until ten years later. Gelredome has a movable roof weighing 800 tonnes. The Gelredome pitch is in a container. Four computer-controlled hydraulic machines bring the container weighing 11 million kilos into the stadium at a speed of 90 centimetres a minute; this takes just a few hours. In the construction of Gelredome every possible consideration has been given to the environment. An environmentally friendly heat and cold storage system provides heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. Though fêted as an architectural masterpiece, the Gelredome is primarily a top-notch sporting venue. It is home to SBV Vitesse, who played their first match there in March, 1998, when they defeated NAC Breda 4-1. On a different note, the Spice Girls were the first major music act to play at the stadium days later.

Romania will play here his second game against Portugal on 17 June from 18.

CHARLEROI

Name : Stade Communal

Home Club : R. Charleroi SC

Year Built : 1904

Capacity : 30,000 seats

Home of R.Charleroi SC for almost a century, the Stade Communal has, like most of the state-of-the-art venues for EURO 2000 undergone a major facelift in recent years. After EURO 2000™ the top tier seats will first be taken down and the roof of the new stand will be lowered. Following this alteration, the stand will only consist of two tiers. After EURO 2000™ the capacity of the Charleroi stadium will be reduced to approximately 22,000 seats. The stadium could be built thanks to financial support from, among others, the Walloon District, the City of Charleroi and the National Lottery. It was designed by Paul Petit & Associés SA - Charleroi. The three stands built in 1998 and 1999 have been constructed in the shape of a pyramid.

Romania va juca aici ultimul meci din grupa impotriva echipei Angliei pe 20 Iunie de la 20:45.
